Summer Fun Day in Miramichi

Last weekend me & my buddy A.J. had a Summer Fun Day in Miramichi.
First stop was the Miramichi Airport to check out the annual Miramichi Fly-In.

We looked at the planes on display, grabbed a BBQ hotdog and went in search of the local flight school pilot who was offering sight seeing tours around the Miramichi. We found Jonathon Stewart ready to head for the sky!

A.J. bravely sat up front.

We got some great aerial shots of the Miramichi River and out towards the Bay. See the speedboat in the picture above.

And of course we had to get a shot of the new Walmart development site.

We landed feeling a little sorry for have eaten those hotdogs (burp), and set out for one of my favourite places, French Fort Cove, to get our heads out of the clouds.

We had never tried the paddle boats before so we rented one and had a great time paddling all around the cove, in search of the Headless Nun.

We reluctantly left the cove in search of more food, some icecream, a game of tennis, and ended the day at Middle Island.

A great view of the bridge.

On my leisurly drive yesterday we saw an interesting site and I thought I would share it with you. We met daisy and her youngin Buttercup.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY MARK!

Mark, the big stud, with his balloons.

Today was Mark's birthday and he actually tried to sneak it by us!

Wasn't going to tell anybody!

But, he made the mistake of telling Kathleen who works next door at Silicon East and knowing how much the Mighty Miramichi gang loves birthday parties, she helped us plan a last minute surprise.

Stephanie (Mighty Mactaquac), Mark & Kathleen

Everyone that was available grabbed a balloon and headed for Saddlers Café on Historic Water Street. Thank you Alan & staff for accommodating us on short notice and for the excellent meals...especially the desserts... We sampled such homemade goodies as: Carrot Soup with Ginger, Chicken Enchiladas, Cajun Chicken Caesar Salad, Italian Meatball Pannini, Carrot Cake, Orange Cake with Chocolate Chips...and virgin Margaritas served in cute little plastic pails. Yummy!

Ahoy! Europa docks at Ritchie Wharf

It couldn't have been a more beautiful day for the arrival of tall ship Europa, which docked at Ritchie Wharf late this morning. Not a lot of people were aware of its journey to Miramichi (including me), but I read about it in the paper this morning, so my spotters let me know the moment it was in site off Sheldrake Island. I took these shots at Chatham Marina and Ritchie Wharf - what a spectacular site. Be sure to view this massive barque at Ritchie Wharf on the weekend before it departs on Sunday afternoon.

Europa: Specs
Flag: The Netherlands
Rig: Barque
Homeport: Amsterdam
Sparred Length: 185 ft.
Length on Deck: 143 ft.
Length Overall: 150 ft.
Draft: 12 ft.
Beam: 24 ft.
Rig Height: 109 ft.
Sail Area: 11,000 sq. ft.
Displacement: 303 tons
Crew: 12 trainees

The historic Europa was built for the City of Hamburg in 1911. Between 1987 and 1994, she received a full restoration and is now rigged as a three-masted barque. Europa represents the end of the famous clipper era and is one of the few ships in the world that carries a full set of studding sails. The Europa received a nick name, "The Ocean Wanderer" as a result of her many global journeys.

North Shore Choppers

I was watching T.V. at my humble abode (minding my own business, of course) when I heard the unmistakable purr of approximately 175 motorbikes cruising down Water Street. I immediately dashed from the Lazy Boy, grabbed my digital camera, and followed the crowd, wondering what this sudden jolt of life in Loggieville was all about.

All the Choppers assembled at the Familyland Campground, where the annual Bikes for Tykes Toy Ride organized by Salvation Army was being held. There was local entertainment, vendors, a barbeque and even Steff's Tattoo & Air-Brush Shop from Campbellton on-site.

Here are some of the more interesting pics I captured this afternoon:

What a cool bike, eh?

Hi i just I would show everyone how well my babies are getting along. Well how one of them is anyway. The others aren't quite as brave.

I received this from a friend in Grand Falls and figured it was worth sharing. I'm not sure where it originated... a quick Google search indicated it was written by George Carlin but I guess his name gets tagged onto a lot of things he didn't write, so who knows... Anyway, it's worth reading, young or old.

How to Stay Young
1. Throw out nonessential numbers. This includes age, weight and height. Let the doctor worry about them. That is why you pay him or her.

2. Keep only cheerful friends. The grouches pull you down.

3. Keep learning. Learn more about the computer, crafts, gardening, whatever. Never let the brain idle. "An idle mind is the devil's workshop." And the devil's name is Alzheimer's.

4. Enjoy the simple things.

5. Laugh often, long and loud. Laugh until you gasp for breath.

6. The tears happen. Endure, grieve, and move on. The only person whois with us our entire life, is ourselves. Be ALIVE while you are alive.

7. Surround yourself with what you love, whether it's family, pets, keepsakes, music, plants, hobbies, whatever. Your home is your refuge.

8. Cherish your health: if it's good, preserve it; if it's unstable, improve it; if it's beyond what you can improve, get help.

9. Don't take guilt trips. Take a trip to the mall, to the next county, to a foreign country, but NOT to where the guilt is.

10. Tell the people you love that you love them, at every opportunity.
AND ALWAYS REMEMBER:

Life is not measured by the number of breaths we take, but by the moments that take your breath away.

Hey it's me Stef (using Stacy's ID), and I would like to thank Tim for taking me on a tour of the Ex. It was my first time there, but I can guarantee it won't be the last! The exhibitors were wonderful and friendly, as well as the staff. What a great job guys, keep up the good work! Here are some pics I thought you might enjoy...

FRENCH FORT COVE FUNDRAISER
There is a fundraiser on Sunday, Aug.29, to show support and help raise funds for the French Fort Cove Eco Center. The centre will host a first class curling rink, educational displays on the local flora & fauna, meeting & classroom facilities, and more. It will be a huge draw for our tourism industry and an asset to the community. Here is a picture of the conceptual drawing.

Last night I went for a walk at French Fort Cove and as you can see, I spent more time taking pics than walking.

Wednesday was a pretty busy day, with all our one-on-one staff meetings being held in the morning.... I'm looking back at pretty busy and thinking how strange that must sound to someone from away. Or is it a common phrase?

Anyway...yesterday I took pics of some of the guys in their Mighty Miramichi t-shirts, featuring sammy the salmon in the logo. We're going to set up the Mighty Miramichi online shopping cart and sell t-shirts, hats, sweatshirts, golf shirts, etc. The guys were a little hesitant (except for Wally who loves to pose for the camera), but in the end they made great models.

Acadia Celebrations in Miramichi

Downtown Miramichi "On the Square" was rockin' this weekend at the Tintamarre, the Annual Acadian Day celebration on Aug.15.

Swing had the crowd dancing and cheering with their techno party mix style and were quite popular with the girls...signing autographs and posing for pictures.

Dirk had a lot of fun with the clowns "Drouille-Zip-E" who threw popcorn at him while he tried to snap their picture.

Many people dressed up for the celebration.

There's a whole lotta hayin going on!

As haying season in New Brunswick comes to a close, here are some pics to enjoy from Dirk, skipper of the Mighty Kent community.

Our good friend, Andy, spent some time at Gordon's Wharf recently. As always, Andy got the great shots! And luckily he decided to share them with us. Looks like a great day!

Fierté acadienne dans le comté de Northumberland

Visit any French community in the Maritimes this month, and you will see houses decorated as the one pictured below. I took this shot on Friday near Néguac during a sales appointment. Almost every house and business along the route had banners, signs, and elaborate decorations, displaying their Acadian pride. This year marks the 400th Anniversary of the arrival of Pierre Dugua, Samuel Champlain and 77 other men who carved out the first French settlement in the New World. Take the time this summer to discover your family roots -I bet you have some Acadian blood in you.

Thanks for the b'day party guys! What a lot of fun...and you surprised me too! I feel bad now because I thought everyone was slacking off...Maizie & Leslie took an extended lunch break (picking up the cake & stuff) and Stephanie was hanging around when I knew she had work to do elsewhere (waiting for the party). Just when I thought Maizie & Leslie would never return, Dirk rec'd a secret phone call which he said was from Leslie (who doesn't have a cell phone) and the call display showed Province of NB. When I asked him what Leslie was doing he said he didn't know and bolted from the office. I figured they must have broken down or something. Turns out they were calling from an office upstairs and they soon showed up with an armload of balloons to the tune of musical b'day candles.

So we did the balloon dance!

Stacy's birthday was this past Sunday, so we surprised her with a cake and gifts today. Happy Birthday Stacy!!!!
