Holy Mothman!

Last Saturday, very early in the am, something caught my eye when walking past my sun deck. Was it a bird, a bat..... how about a 4.5 inch moth?

I had never seen such a moth before, so I did a bit of research. I believe it is a Luna Moth:

Luna moths are one of the most unusual and beautiful of the North American moths known as Saturnidae. They are well known for their green-yellow colors and long tails, and although they are often seen in pictures, they are a real surprise when found in nature. Although they are common throughout the eastern U.S., their night flying habits and short life span as an adult moth, only about 1 week, combine to make them a rare find. The luna moth, with a wingspan of 4.5-5.0 inches, is one of the largest moths in North America and is very common in many of the eastern states from Maine all the way to Florida. They usually are seen less as you go westward to Texas and the Great Plains. It is also found in southern regions of many Canadian provinces such as Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Quebec, Ontario, Manitoba, and Saskachewan.

Mango & Downtown Miramichi Get Business Community Moving

Downtown Miramichi in partnership with the Health Authority’s Mango program have plans to get the Miramichi business community moving.

Beginning Monday, July 11, Downtown Miramichi and Mango are inviting members of the business community to take part in “Network with Nature,” an initiative to increase physical activity in the community, while socializing with people from the business community. Natalie Walsh, Marketing and Event Coordinator for the business association came up with the idea.

“After meeting with the Mango team and seeing the statistics of health problems on the river, and what healthy eating and active living can help reduce, I wanted to come up with an idea that would be a way for the business community to network, while being active,” Walsh said.

Members of the business community are invited to French Fort Cove every Monday, starting July 11. Plans are to meet at the playground at 6:45 and hit the trails at 7 pm.

Mango coordinator Jacqueline Kerr is pleased with this partnership with the Downtown Miramichi Business Network. “We are encouraged by the support of this business association and it is exciting to be a part of this partnership. We hope people take advantage of this opportunity to get active.”

Mango is a population-health based program that promotes healthy eating and active living throughout the region. It was first initiated in May 2002 by MRHA dieticians after studies showed high rates of overweight and obesity, heart disease and cancer in this region.

Closer to home in Miramichi, we received this letter today:

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am looking for a letter of support similar to the one attached. Many patients needing Dialysis treatment are required to travel to Moncton three times each week for treatment.

The George Dumont Hospital operates a Dialysis Clinic in the Miramichi. This clinic can treat 24 patients three times per week, but the demand is much greater. Therefore the George Dumont Hospital has requested funding from the Department of Health in order to double the capacity from 24 to 48 patients per week.

To help reduce the hardship caused to many dialysis patients, who have to travel to Moncton, we are asking you to send a letter to the Honourable Elvy Robichaud. Ask him to support the George Dumont Hospital in their request for funding for the expansion of the dialysis Unit in Miramichi.

Sincerely
Gilles J. Laplante

The sample letter is below. You can cut and paste it into whatever word processing software you use, personalise it with your contact information, print and mail.

Dear Mr. Minister,

I'm writing you in support of the request from the George Dumont Hospital to your Government to expand its dialyses unit in the Miramichi from an existing capacity of 24 people 3 times per week to 48 people 3 times per week.

There is extreme hardship caused to people having to travel three times per week for treatment to the George Dumont in Moncton.

Speaking to many of the patients both French and English, they are very satisfied with the bilingual service provided and wish they could all get their treatment on the Miramichi.

Sincerely,
(sender)
This weekend the biggest concert in the history of the world was held to increase awareness of poverty in Africa and put pressure on the G-8, who are meeting in Scotland this week, to solve the problem of poverty. Every three seconds a child dies in Africa. 50,000 people die there everyday. There were a couple of really poignant public service announcements running on television this weekend. The first shows a series of famous people snapping their fingers every three seconds to show the death toll, someone's daughter, someone's son. The second asked if 50,000 people died in Manhatten on Sunday, if 50,000 people died in Moscow on Monday, if 50,000 people died in Vancouver on Tuesday and so on covering cities in the developed world for a whole week, wouldn't we find out what was happening and fix it. Aid is not enough. Corrupt governments need to topple. Debts need to be forgiven. Trade needs to be fair. These are the things the G-8 can change. And that's what the Live 8 concert was all about. If you want to help, go to www.live8live.com and give them your name to take to the leaders of the world. You can also upload your photo and join the collage of faces that will be lining the streets of Edinburgh for the leaders to see.

Stacy and Terry took some shots of the fireworks the other night. The fireworks are part of the Rock 'n Roll Festival weekend, but coincide with Canada Day celebrations. Terry took his photos from the water. Stacy from the street. They're all mixed up here, no particular order. Enjoy!
