Sandra Phinney Freelance Writing Workshop This Weekend

“If you’ve ever thought about writing nonfiction stories for publication—and getting paid for it—an upcoming workshop may be just the thing you need,” says freelance writer, Sandra Phinney. She adds that thousands of periodicals, trade journals, newspapers, catalogues and promotional materials are published in Canada on a daily basis. Although some publications have writers on staff, many magazines and companies contract writing services and assign stories to freelance writers.

Phinney is delivering a workshop titled Writing for Pleasure and Profit in Miramichi, Saturday, May 27, from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the NBCC. A prolific writer, Phinney has penned hundreds of stories for over 50 publications in Canada and the US and has a number of corporate clients. She also does research and screenwriting for video productions and has two published books.

Phinney loves the challenge and diversity of freelancing. In any given week she can be writing a travel story about a trip to West Africa, developing a script for a training video, interviewing someone in the US about growing orchids, or doing research about elephants for her third book. Phinney says, "There are never two days alike. Every day has a good dose of delightful surprises."

Jodi DeLong, Atlantic Regional Director, Professional Writers Association of Canada says: “There's no denying that freelance writing is challenging in Atlantic Canada, but it can be very rewarding. Sandra Phinney is an exquisite writer whose enthusiasm for freelancing is contagious and inspiring to anyone who listens to her teach or reads her work. Having Phinney offer a workshop in Miramichi is a terrific opportunity for budding and experienced freelancers alike.”

The focus of the workshop is on setting up a freelance business with an emphasis on writing for magazines. The workshop will cover topics like the importance of researching your markets, how to write winning queries, and tips for taking decent photos to accompany your articles. Phinney adds, “Participants will leave with a bagfull of information and tools that will put them on the freelance track.”

Addiction Services Hours Change

Beginning May 1st new visiting hours were implemented in the inpatient addiction services unit. Patients are able to have visitors on Wednesdays from 6-9 p.m. and Sunday from 3-4:30 p.m. and 6-9 p.m. as opposed to seven days a week.

“The new visiting hours are being implemented to improve client safety and restrict distractions resulting in enhanced client outcomes,” says Cynthia MacDonald, Director of Miramichi Addiction Services. She says the visitation policy was revised to improve the health and safety of both clients and staff. Client and staff safety is a priority for the inpatient addictions unit.

“We believe that families and support persons have a very important role in the client’s recovery.” She says this new policy balances the benefits of family centred care with assuring the best recovery outcomes for clients.

Visitors will also be restricted to clients during the first 48 hours of admission. “Upon admission, clients will advise staff of the names of appropriate visitors and this information will be placed in their chart.”

“Adults permitted to visit will be notified by telephone and will be required to show a photo ID card upon entering the inpatient unit.” She says visitors will sign a form to enter and exit the unit. Any parcels will be provided to the staff for assessment of safety risk. “Staff has the right to restrict any visitor access to the unit when there is a question of risk for safety and security. Clients will be informed of any such restrictions.”

Other visitation guidelines on the inpatient unit include the limitation of two visitors at a time, no visitation outdoors, and only children of clients will be permitted to visit under supervision in the client’s room.
World Asthma Day Celebrated

World Asthma day was celebrated May 2nd. The goal of World Asthma Day is to raise awareness about asthma and improve asthma care throughout the world. Staff of the Miramichi Community Asthma/COPD clinic marked the day by holding an information display in the lobby of the Miramichi Regional Hospital. The asthma program nurse and respiratory therapist were available to answer questions from the general public.

Two million Canadians live with asthma, 60,000 in the province of New Brunswick alone. Asthma is a chronic (long-term) disease that makes it hard to breathe. At its worst, asthma can be fatal; every year, asthma kills about 500 Canadians. Asthma can't be cured, but it can be managed. With proper treatment, people with asthma can lead normal, active lives.

The Miramichi Community Asthma/COPD clinic is a population based program that provides disease management skills and education support for individuals (both children and adults) with asthma/ COPD and their families. Two-hundred and twenty clients received service at the clinic from April 2005 to March 2006. The goal of the clinic is to empower patients, through education, to achieve control of their asthma/COPD and improve their quality of life.

Bill Fraser Seeks Liberal Nomination

http://www.billfraser.ca/

A fresh new face has entered the political scene. Bill Fraser has officially announced he will be seeking the nomination as the Liberal candidate in the riding of Miramichi Bay du Vin.

Fraser is most widely recognized in our community as the man who brought Miramichier’s together during the “Save Our Hospital” campaign in 2004. Healthcare strikes a personal cord with everyone and the ‘grassroots’ initiative grew out of frustration and a disbelief that a government could rip away something Miramichier’s worked so hard for and deserved.

Promising to have a strong voice representing the interests of Miramichi in Fredericton, Fraser encourages community involvement before important decisions are made in the Legislature. Fraser is a team player, he’s a forward thinker and open to new ideas. His result orientated approach to the issues, and positive outlook draws people to the cause.

As a member of the Miramichi Prosperity Task Force, Fraser listened as many important initiatives were identified by the community and is frustrated by the lack of action.

One such opportunity is working together to ensure the province develops an action plan to upgrade Route #108 (Renous – Plaster Rock Hwy). Improvements to this vital linkage from Quebec to Eastern Canada will result in a positive economic impact for the transportation and tourism industries in our area.

As a volunteer Bill has worked on many community events including Canada Days, White Gold Festival, Christmas parades and he was also part of the team that brought many tall ships to Miramichi.

A strong man, guided by common sense and hard work, he has been employed since the age of fifteen. Operating his own business for over fifteen years has instilled the importance of self-reliance and accountability in his character.

Fraser has operated Bill’s Kwik Way since 1991 and started BQM Communications in 1995, expanding to Newcastle, Rogersville and Rexton. Fraser sold BQM Communications to DownEast in 2001 and continues to operate Bill’s Kwik-Way today.

Fraser stepped back into the classroom in 2002 and is currently working towards a Bachelor’s degree through the University Programs offered in Miramichi by University of New Brunswick, Mount Allison University and St. Thomas University.

Bill feels that the Miramichi has missed many opportunities in the past and this trend has to stop. He is asking for your support to secure the nomination as the liberal candidate for Miramichi Bay Du Vin.

Bill Fraser Biography

Bill Fraser, 36 years of age, was born and raised in Miramichi (Chatham). He is the son of Pina (White) of Nelson and the late Gerald Fraser of Bay du Vin. He has three brothers, Gary (Nancy), Kenny (Marlene), Wayne (Celine) and three sisters; Wendy Jenkins (Jimmy), Peggy Roper (Bruce) and Judy Dignam (Kenny).

Fraser graduated from James M. Hill High School in 1988. In 2002 Fraser stepped back into the classroom and is currently working towards a bachelor’s degree through the University Programs offered in Miramichi.

Bill Fraser has been in the workforce since the age of fifteen working two jobs while attending school full-time. At the age of twenty-one Bill purchased his own business, Bill’s Kwik Way and after fifteen years it is still going strong. In 1995 Fraser started BQM Communications, expanding to Newcastle, Rogersville and Rexton. Fraser sold BQM Communications to Downeast in 2002.

As a volunteer Bill has worked on many community events including Canada Days, White Gold Festival, Christmas parades and he was also part of the team that brought many tall ships to Miramichi. Bill has also been a member of Rotary and the Lions club.

Fraser has also been on the board of directors for Enterprise Miramichi, Greater Miramichi Chamber of Commerce, Northumberland Busines Advisory Center, Chatham Non-Profit housing and currently sits on the board of directors for Historic Water Street and the City’s Economic Development committee.

Promising to have a strong voice representing the interests of Miramichi in Fredericton, Fraser encourages community involvement before important decisions are made. Fraser is a team player, he’s a forward thinker and open to new ideas. His result-orientated approach to the issues, and positive outlook draws people to the cause.

Bill Fraser is approachable; he cares about our community and is willing to stand up for people. Fraser believes we need to create an environment that will attract industry and jobs.

Fraser will lobby for improvements to our University program so that one can obtain a full University Degree without leaving the Miramichi.

Healthcare and seniors have to be a priority for our region. Fraser will not allow government to take any of our services away and will lobby for more services and more doctors.

Fraser will also lobby for more dollars to improve our highways and roads and is committed to developing an action plan to upgrade route 108 (Renous – Plaster Rock Highway). Improvements to this vital linkage from Quebec to Eastern Canada will result in a positive economic impact for the transportation and tourism industries in our area.

Bill’s extensive community involvement and business experience and the fact that he is approachable and accessible to everyone in the riding are key attributes that will ensure that our region isn’t ignored by government anymore.
