David Adams Richards Up for a GG
David Adams Richards

The Canada Council for the Arts announced the finalists for the 2008 Governor General's Literary Awards yesterday and a Miramichier is among the nominees.

David Adams Richards is nominated in the fiction category for The Lost Highway. The Canada Council for the Arts statement said, "The Lost Highway is an intimate and compelling psychological portrait of a lost soul. David Adams Richards writes with an overarching humanity that points to our foibles with sympathy and humour. His open, honest and supple prose creates a world we at once recognize and see anew."

Richards is one of only three writers to have won both the fiction and non-fiction awards for Nights Below Station Street in 1988 and Lines on the Water: A Fisherman's Life on the Miramichi in 1998, respectively.

The finalists include authors from ages 28 to 77, several previous finalists and three first-time finalists who are journalists. The awards are in the categories of fiction, non fiction, poetry, drama, children's literature (text and illustration) and translation.

A total of 1,469 books were nominated for this year's awards. Thirty-two of the 73 finalists are nominated for the first time. At least nine of the finalists are under the age of 35. The themes of mortality, war and place figure prominently in several of the books.

Canada Council for the Arts funds, administers and promotes the Governor General's Literary Awards. Each winner will receive $25,000 and a specially-bound copy of the winning book. The publisher of each winning book will receive $3,000 to support promotional activities.

Non-winning finalists will each receive $1,000 in recognition of their selection as finalists, bringing the total value of the Awards to approximately $450,000.

The winners will be announced on Tuesday, Nov. 18 at 10 a.m. EST at the McCord Museum of Canadian History in Montreal.

More than Salmon Coming Back to the Miramichi River

Seven river communities stretched along this part of the Miramichi River in New Brunswick have banded together in planning the largest homecoming reunion ever to be experienced in the area. Come Home to the River festivities are planned for August 14-16, 2009 in McNamee.

Reminiscent of Wilf Carter's song, "I've been everywhere man, traveled everywhere man, …I've been everywhere," it seems the settlements of McNamee, Carroll Crossing, O'Donnell Town, New Bandon, Ludlow, Porter Cove and Priceville should have been included in that song. People from these communities past and present along with those who have ever visited have standing invitations to attend.

"The homecoming will have something for everyone from youth to seniors," said Lorne Amos the chairman of the committee. The planning committee has started to plan events around gospel concerts, ball tournaments, a craft show, canoe trips and races, walking excursions and dances. There is no doubt of course it will include the Footbridge. This 630 foot long pedestrian bridge that spans the river between McNamee and Priceville has linked the community since it was built. It holds memories for everyone since a tragedy in 1939 that touched everyone's life in this close-knit community. Amos said, "The committee has already started to work and after two meetings people from as far away as Vancouver, Toronto, Detroit and even as far as Amman, Jordan are making plans to attend."

The impetus for Come to the River began as a topic on a Facebook group created by Irva Larsen one of the committee members. "The McNamee on the Mighty Miramichi Facebook group has over 250 members and it is expected there will be over 500 people attending the homecoming," said Larsen. The Volunteer Coordinator is Euphemia O'Donnell-Black. Volunteers who wish to be involved with Come Home to the River – McNamee 2009 are invited to contact O'Donnell-Black at 506-369-9105 or through email aeblack@nb.sympatico.ca.

The Miramichi Trail part of the NB Trails system that extends from Astle to Quarryville runs for 75 kilometers along the Miramichi at this point and is a favourite activity for both summer and winter.

Miramichi celebrates Emergency Nurses Week

One of the first health care professionals you will meet and speak to in a hospital emergency department is a nurse. Emergency nurses at the Miramichi Regional Hospital will be celebrating Emergency Nurses Week by promoting this nursing specialty and recognizing their contribution to the health and safety of Miramichi citizens.

This year the National Emergency Nurses Affiliation (NENA) of Canada is celebrating Emergency Nurses week October 5-11. Emergency Nurses day is Wednesday, October 8. This year’s theme “Emergency Nurses…Simply the Best!” reflects the dedication of emergency nurses in the Miramichi and around the world.

In Miramichi, nurses provided patient care as well as a supportive and a caring atmosphere to 42,087 patients from April 2007 to March 2008. Their special training provides them the skills to make critical decisions affecting patient care. Some of these skills include advanced cardiac care, trauma care, sexual assault examinations, and advanced emergency children’s care.

World Breastfeeding Week to be celebrated

Miramichi's Baby Friendly Committee in partnership with the VON Healthy Baby and Me program, Family Resource Centres, and Mommies and Tummies will be celebrating World Breastfeeding Week during the first week of October through various activities both in hospital and the community. Events planned include participation in the International Quintessence Breastfeeding Challenge, an information display, and a gift basket donated to a new mother who has initiated breastfeeding.

The International Quintessence Breastfeeding Challenge will be held on Saturday, October 11 at 10:30 a.m., at the Miramichi Atlantic Superstore's Community Room for all breastfeeding mothers in the Miramichi region. The challenge will record the most children being breastfed simultaneously at 11 a.m. (local time) across Canada and the United States. Refreshments and door prizes will be available. For more information about this event, women are encouraged to call the VON Healthy Baby and Me program at 773-7005 or Mommies and Tummies at 622-1524.

An information display will also be available in the lobby of the Miramichi Regional Hospital from October 8-10. The display will include information about the importance and benefits of breastfeeding as well as community support information. Gold ribbons will be available at the display and individuals will be encouraged to wear the gold ribbon signifying breastfeeding as the golden standard as the ideal for exclusive and continued breastfeeding.

A new mother who has initiated breastfeeding with her newborn will also be recognized. All mothers of newborns whom are born during World Breastfeeding Week and initiate breastfeeding will have their names entered into a draw to win a gift basket. The basket will be presented at the end of the week.

Research has shown that exclusive and sustained breastfeeding provides a biologically efficient system that gives nutritional, immunological, and emotional nutrition for normal growth and development during the first year and beyond of a child's life. Breast milk also contains antibodies and other immune factors that help babies fight off illness more effectively.

The Miramichi Regional Hospital and Miramichi Public Health have been working to become a designated World Health Organization (WHO)/UNICEF Baby- Friendly organization.

The Baby-Friendly Initiative (BFI) is an international ten-step program established in 1992 by World Health Organization (WHO) and UNICEF to promote, support and protect breastfeeding worldwide in hospitals and in the community. Miramichi's Baby-Friendly committee has been working with its community partners such as the First Nations communities to meet the required Ten Steps to Successful Breastfeeding.
