Miramichi River Tourism Association

The Miramichi River Tourism Association held their Annual General Meeting on March 13/09 at the Miramichi Country Music Opry in Red Bank.

A few of us at Mighty Miramichi attended and had a great time enjoying the presentations, entertainment, meal and catching up with old friends.

The guest speaker was Helga Loverseed, a world re-known journalist who lives in Quebec, and displays her Scottish heritage through her quaint accent. Helga was very positive and uplifting as she spoke about the uniqueness of Miramichi and how very proud we are, and should be, of our region. Rick Hayward from School District #16 gave a presentation on a portable SMART board, demonstrating the innovative and technological initiatives by students and the opportunities they present to tourism. Currently there are 7 SMART boards located at tourism operations throughout the region which will be used to further engage tourists this summer.

After the business of the meeting, Billy Mullin and the band kept us all entertained - because that's what Billy does best! - and called on the crowd to join in and play or sing. Helga fit right in as she donned a cowboy hat and jumped on the stage to play the spoons and sing several songs including my favourite, "Hey Good Lookin'". I think everyone there would agree that she should be made an honourary Miramichier!

Wade Hallihan of Blackville who works with Tourism & Parks surprised the crowd with his singing ability as he captured us with Desperado and had our feet tapping to Bud the Spud. I'm sure there must be a video of that around here that I can post...

The annual awards ceremony were held in Prince George, British Columbia on February 21st , 2009.

The City of Miramichi celebrates the season of winter and actively promotes all the season has to offer to both residents and visitors. Various players contribute to the significant level of success. A student in the Graphic Design program created an excellent WinterLights Celebrations promotional brochure and poster.

District 16 students, through mentoring and use of the smart board project, created a high level of awareness of the community to the world.

The White Gold promotion realized visitors from as far away as Mexico and Germany. Other key forces include ones such as effective partnerships, winter packages, the Super Host activities, signage and having the Visitor Information Centre open all year! Congratulations.

WinterLights Celebrations is the winter edition of the popular Communities in Bloom program and encourages all Canadians to join in their local community events and activities, and to experience the beauty and thrill of winter.
