Carla Gunn at Words on Water

Date: Thursday, August 20, 2009
Time: 6:30pm - 9:00pm
Location: Saltwater Sounds, 1738 Water Street Miramichi, NB
Phone: 506.773.8010
Email: editor@breadnmolasses.com

This month the Words on Water series is happy to have Carla Gunn with us to read from her acclaimed debut novel, Amphibian.

Along with writing, Carla Gunn works as an occupational consultant and teaches psychology. Her writing has been published in the Globe and Mail, the National Post and heard on CBC radio. Raised in rural Miramichi, she now lives in Fredericton, New Brunswick.

About Amphibian:

Nine-year-old Phineas William Walsh has an encyclopedic knowledge of the natural world. He knows that if you wet a dog's food with your saliva and he refuses to eat it then he's top dog, and he knows that dolphins can sleep half a brain at a time. What he doesn't know, though, is why his grandfather died, or why waste-of-flesh Lyle always picks on him. Or why his parents can't live together -- after all, when other mate-for-life animals have a fight, it's not like one of them just packs his bags and leaves the country.

To make it to-infinity worse, he's worried sick about what humans are doing to the planet, and his mother is worried sick about him. But shouldn't everyone be losing sleep over the fact that a quarter of all Earth's mammals are on the Red List of Threatened Species? So, when a White's tree frog ends up in an aquarium in his fourth-grade classroom, it's the last straw, and he and his best friend, Bird, are spurred to action.

Praise for Amphibian:

"Carla Gunn has fashioned (more likely been possessed by) an irresistible voice. I confess this kid grabbed me from the top and held me in tender thrall." – Globe and Mail

"Sometimes you start reading a book and fall in love by page two. That's what happened when I tore through Carla Gunn's novel Amphibian ... [A] sparkling, memorable debut." – The Coast

-------------

And, as WOW has each month, we have a theme for the evening. This month's theme is "Environment". So dig out any stories, songs, poems or skits with an Environmental theme that you've crafted and share it with an attentive and warm audience during the open mic portion of our evening. Or, if you'd like to share something with us that does not have to do with the theme, that's ok too. We'd love to hear from everyone!

Admission is free, but donations are happily accepted to help us continue with the Words on Water series.

AC/DC fans to receive top-notch medical services

A volunteer medical services team from The Moncton Hospital will once again be tending to the health care needs of concert goers at the upcoming Magnetic Hill Music Festival's AC/DC concert tomorrow on August 6.

"We are pleased to continue our collaboration with the City of Moncton in providing medical services during the Magnetic Hill concert series," says Donald J. Peters, President and CEO of Regional Health Authority B.

He says the city's construction of a permanent primary emergency building has improved the quality of care by providing a spacious, less noisy, dry and well equipped space for medical treatment and equipment. "We are very proud of the 140 dedicated volunteers that provide this service."

Medical services at the concert will include the primary emergency medical building and two secondary medical tents positioned on the perimeter of the concert site. The tents will be easily identifiable with flags bearing a red cross. During the concert, a team of easy to identify first-aide professionals and paramedics will patrol the crowd to help fans with their minor injuries or illnesses. An ambulance fleet and large gator carts that can transport stretchers will also be available if required.

"Our goal is to treat as many people as possible at the concert site to avoid overcrowding at The Moncton Hospital's critical care and trauma departments with minor injuries," says Carole Morey, Program Administrative Director Emergency, Neuro/Rehab and Internal Medicine for The Moncton Hospital.

"One of the most common types of health related illnesses that we see is related to the hot and humid weather and as a result mist tents will be available for concert goers to cool off." She says the mist tent provides a continuous cool, fine mist that lowers the skin and body temperature instantly when someone walks through the tent. "The mist tents provided at the recent Bon Jovi and other previous mega concerts were extremely helpful and aided in reducing health related illnesses."

"We want to ensure everyone stays safe and healthy while they enjoy themselves," says Dr. Gary Duguay, emergency medicine doctor and medical director for the planning committee. To make sure everyone has a positive experience, he has these helpful tips:

Monitor the weather forecast closely and plan accordingly, but remember this is the Maritimes and the weather can change quickly and drastically. Prepare for both hot and cooler temperatures, and rainy weather. Bring layers of clothing that provide good insulation and keeps moisture away from the skin.

Drink plenty of water throughout the day. Dehydration can occur quickly in hot and humid weather.

Each concert goer can bring a 1 Litre bottle of water into the concert but remember to bring fluids to drink while waiting for the gates to open.

Protect yourself from sun exposure by wearing a hat, sunglasses and applying sunscreen regularly. Wear light-coloured, breathable clothing and move into the shade when possible.

Wear comfortable shoes as concert goers will be walking and standing for long periods of time. Also consider the terrain you will be walking on at the site.

Use common sense, listen to your body and respond appropriately. Drink responsibly and prepare for a safe ride home.

Remember to assign a meeting spot with your group early on to ensure no one gets lost during or at the end of the concert.

Remember to eat to avoid becoming weak.

And most importantly have fun!

Healthy Living Expo in Miramichi

The people of the Miramichi region are invited to Healthy Living 2009 happening this week.

Healthy Living 2009 is a wellness event being organized by the Regional Health Authority B-Miramichi Zone and will feature motivational speaker and well-known psychologist Dr. Michael Vallis, PhD, along with an expo component featuring up to 40 displays of chronic disease prevention and management information.

Thursday, May 7 the expo will be open from 4pm-7pm with the Dr. Vallis presentation beginning at 7pm.

"The Miramichi region has some of the highest rates in overweight, obesity, cancer, diabetes and heart-disease," says Fonda Kazi, Vice President of Community Care of Regional Health Authority B. "But this region also has some of the most caring people country-wide and we care about ourselves and each other. Having a wellness expo will give people the chance to collect information, learn what they need to do to change lifestyles and come away with the desire to lead healthy, active lives."

Helping people learn this message will be registered clinical psychologist Dr. Michael Vallis, PhD. Dr. Michael Vallis is employed at the Queen Elizabeth II Health Sciences Centre, Halifax, where he practices health psychology and also is the Associate Professor in Psychiatry and Adjunct Professor in Psychology with Dalhousie University. He is described as an advocate, mentor and supporter of students. In 2007, he received the Clinical Community Recognition Award (CCRA).

Dr. Vallis positively affects the lives of clients and community members through individual and group counseling, public lecturing and an extensive research program. He recently opened the Behavior Change Institute within the Capital District Health Authority in Nova Scotia.

While at Healthy Living 2009, his presentation entitled, "So You Think You Can Dance ... Walking the Walk of Wellness, " will speak on the importance of self-management of chronic disease. His belief is that "lifestyle is twice as effective as medication."

"Dr. Vallis really gets to the heart of the matter when it comes to prevention and management of chronic disease and the choice to live healthier lifestyles. We are excited to be able to organize this event and bring him to speak to the people of this region."

Along with Dr. Vallis's presentation, the expo will feature more than 40 displays of health promotion information on topics ranging from Diabetes to Cancer, smoking cessation to Alzheimer's. Attendees will be able to visit displays of the Arthritis Society, VON, Baby-Friendly Initiative, Mental Health, Sexual Health, healthy eating, physical activity, physiotherapy, in-home rehabilitation, early language services and much, much more.

This event is a three-part event where it will be open to healthcare professionals; general public and workplace wellness committees at different times. It is made possible with financial support from the Department of Wellness, Culture and Sport. Anyone wanting more information on this event can call Clarissa Harris at (506) 623-3273.

Blackville Hosts Fundraiser for Miramichi Walk to Cure Diabetes

A benefit night will happen this Saturday April 4 from 7pm-1am at Nine Pine Truck Stop on Main Street in Blackville. All proceeds will go toward the first annual Miramichi Walk for a Cure to Diabetes. Music will be provided by M.O.T.E.L, a new local band featuring Jake Stewart, Justin Walls, Rudy Miller and Jonathan Walls. Door prizes will be drawn throughout the night.

"Local businesses have been very supportive of this fundraiser," says Jennifer Keenan, Chair of the Miramichi Walk Committee. "We've got some awesome door prizes to give away, something for everyone, including various merchandise and gift certificates ranging in value from $20 up to $100. There are going to be a lot of lucky winners."

Keenan's daughters, Jules, age 8, and Abby, age 6, were both diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes in the summer of 2006. In 2007 and 2008 the Keenan family raised funds and participated in Moncton's Walk for a Cure.

"This year we thought it was time for Miramichi to have its own walk," Keenan says. "There are so many local families affected by diabetes and new children are being diagnosed all the time."

"Until it affects your life, people do not understand what it means to live with this disease," she explains. "Living with type 1 diabetes is something you have to deal with and monitor every moment of every day. It's a lot of work, a huge responsibility for parents and the children. You can't ever have a down day because your child's health is at stake. We need to constantly count the girls' carbs, do needle pokes to test their blood sugar, and make sure they're getting insulin in order to keep their diabetes under control."

Canada has the sixth highest occurrence rate of type 1 diabetes in children 14 years of age and younger in the world. Type 1 diabetes is the most severe form of diabetes, striking infants, children and young adults, leaving them insulin-dependent for life. Insulin, however, is not a cure, nor does it prevent the eventual and devastating complications to the disease which may include kidney failure, blindness, heart disease, stroke, amputation and even death.

"A cure means everything for my family," Keenan says. "And with all the modern advances and breakthroughs in research, we believe that a cure is not only possible but that it will happen in the girls' lifetime. So I hope that people will not only come out and make a donation at Nine Pine this weekend, but also support our walk by volunteering, entering a team or pledging a walker."

The Miramichi Walk for a Cure will take place on August 30th, 2009, at the Middle Island Irish Historical Park. Funds raised will go toward the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF), an organization founded in 1970 by parents of children with diabetes and the only major diabetes organization focused exclusively on research both for a cure and improving the quality of life of people living with the disease.

For more information about Miramichi's Walk for a Cure to Diabetes contact Keenan at (506) 843-6081 or email jasonjen@nbnet.nb.ca.

More than Salmon Coming Back to the Miramichi River

Seven river communities stretched along this part of the Miramichi River in New Brunswick have banded together in planning the largest homecoming reunion ever to be experienced in the area. Come Home to the River festivities are planned for August 14-16, 2009 in McNamee.

Reminiscent of Wilf Carter's song, "I've been everywhere man, traveled everywhere man, …I've been everywhere," it seems the settlements of McNamee, Carroll Crossing, O'Donnell Town, New Bandon, Ludlow, Porter Cove and Priceville should have been included in that song. People from these communities past and present along with those who have ever visited have standing invitations to attend.

"The homecoming will have something for everyone from youth to seniors," said Lorne Amos the chairman of the committee. The planning committee has started to plan events around gospel concerts, ball tournaments, a craft show, canoe trips and races, walking excursions and dances. There is no doubt of course it will include the Footbridge. This 630 foot long pedestrian bridge that spans the river between McNamee and Priceville has linked the community since it was built. It holds memories for everyone since a tragedy in 1939 that touched everyone's life in this close-knit community. Amos said, "The committee has already started to work and after two meetings people from as far away as Vancouver, Toronto, Detroit and even as far as Amman, Jordan are making plans to attend."

The impetus for Come to the River began as a topic on a Facebook group created by Irva Larsen one of the committee members. "The McNamee on the Mighty Miramichi Facebook group has over 250 members and it is expected there will be over 500 people attending the homecoming," said Larsen. The Volunteer Coordinator is Euphemia O'Donnell-Black. Volunteers who wish to be involved with Come Home to the River – McNamee 2009 are invited to contact O'Donnell-Black at 506-369-9105 or through email aeblack@nb.sympatico.ca.

The Miramichi Trail part of the NB Trails system that extends from Astle to Quarryville runs for 75 kilometers along the Miramichi at this point and is a favourite activity for both summer and winter.

Miramichi celebrates Emergency Nurses Week

One of the first health care professionals you will meet and speak to in a hospital emergency department is a nurse. Emergency nurses at the Miramichi Regional Hospital will be celebrating Emergency Nurses Week by promoting this nursing specialty and recognizing their contribution to the health and safety of Miramichi citizens.

This year the National Emergency Nurses Affiliation (NENA) of Canada is celebrating Emergency Nurses week October 5-11. Emergency Nurses day is Wednesday, October 8. This year’s theme “Emergency Nurses…Simply the Best!” reflects the dedication of emergency nurses in the Miramichi and around the world.

In Miramichi, nurses provided patient care as well as a supportive and a caring atmosphere to 42,087 patients from April 2007 to March 2008. Their special training provides them the skills to make critical decisions affecting patient care. Some of these skills include advanced cardiac care, trauma care, sexual assault examinations, and advanced emergency children’s care.

Miramichi Regional Hospital celebrates Patient Safety Week

Canadian Patient Safety Week will be celebrated from September 29 to October 4th. Canadian Patient Safety Week celebrates local, regional, and national initiatives to improve patient safety, with events and activities focusing on this year’s theme – “Knowledge is the best medicine. Ask. Talk. Listen.” stressing the prevention of medication errors.

Patient safety is a priority for health care professionals at the Miramichi Regional Hospital. To mark the week an information display about the importance of preventing medication errors is being held in the lobby of the Miramichi Regional Hospital. Information at the display promotes the message “Knowledge is the best medicine. Ask. Talk. Listen.” Throughout the week pharmacy, extra mural program, and quality/patient safety staff will be holding activities throughout the facility promoting the importance of preventing medication errors.

The Miramichi Regional Hospital was recognized as one of three regions in the country in making a significant improvement in medication reconciliation as part of the Safer Health Care Now! program. The primary goal of medication reconciliation is to eliminate medication errors by ensuring that all medications taken by the patient are recorded at all transfer points of care for all patients. Over the last two years, the medication reconciliation team at the hospital developed a process where all admitted patients have their medications reviewed by a pharmacist within the first 24 hours following admission. This is accomplished as a means to reduce the potential for errors stemming from the patient taking different doses than what is listed on the medicine bottles and over the counter vitamins and herbs.

For more information about patient safety or patient safety week, visit the Canadian Patient Safety Institute at www.patientsafetyinstitute.ca or Safer Healthcare Now! at www.saferhealthcarenow.ca

Network for Young Professionals in Miramichi

The CBDC and Enterprise Miramichi have joined forces in order to revive a network destined for young professionals and entrepreneurs. The Miramichi Young Business Professionals & Involved Entrepreneurs (MYPIE) is being created to reach young professionals and entrepreneurs aged 18-35 years old who are living and working in Miramichi.

This initiative follows a series of recommendations made by the Miramichi Community Action Committee, who after speaking to external experts and consulting with key stakeholders in the area, mentioned the need for Miramichi to have its own network of young professionals. This kind of network is not necessarily new to the region as some people had tried to initiate the project on a volunteer basis on a few occasions over the years. By taking the project under the CBDC and Enterprise Miramichi’s umbrella and having employees working on the project, both economic development agencies believe we should see a revitalized network of young professionals gathering in the upcoming year.

“This network will be great for our young people as they need to have the opportunity to voice their concerns, share their ideas, and help improve the overall economy of the region. It really is a win-win for everyone in the community to have our young people involved,” states Brian Donovan, Executive Director for Enterprise Miramichi.

Greg McNulty, General Manager for the CBDC adds, “We have seen an emergence of young entrepreneurs in the area and we need that young entrepreneurial spirit to retain our young professionals.”

With monthly activities planned from September to June, MYPIE’s initiators, Terry Stewart (Youth Development Officer for the CBDC) and Nadine Dunn (Job Liaison Officer for Enterprise Miramichi) hope that it will make things easier for young professionals and entrepreneurs to participate. There will be at least 10 events held on a Wednesday each month ranging from networking sessions to luncheons or breakfast meetings and tours of local businesses. Beginning on September 24th 2008 with a Wine & Cheese reception in the Sevogle Room at the Rodd Miramichi River Hotel from 5-7pm. Young professionals will speak about the benefits of living and working in Miramichi.

The focus of MYPIE is primarily to give young professionals and entrepreneurs an opportunity to gather on a regular basis to enable them to either network with other people, exchange information, and celebrate their efforts. To that effect, a lot of work is being put on success stories, which is why the kick-off activity on September 24th will showcase young people speaking up about the benefits of living and working in Miramichi.

If you want a slice of the pie and to be involved in community affairs, participate in MYPIE!

For more information contact Nadine Dunn at Enterprise Miramichi 506.625.1589, email nadine.dunn@ent-miramichi.ca, or Terry Stewart at CBDC 506.778.2121, email terry.stewart@cbdc.ca.

Giant yard sale benefits Juvenile Diabetes research

A family dealing with Juvenile Diabetes is hosting a giant yard sale this weekend. Proceeds from the sale will benefit research for a cure.

The event was conceived and organized by Jennifer Keenan. The Barnettville resident and her husband Jason have two children living with the disease. Almost a year ago, and within three weeks of each other, their daughters Jules and Abby were diagnosed.

“It was absolutely devastating,” Keenan said. “It changes your whole life. You have to learn to test their sugar, to watch their carbs, to give them their insulin. You feel like your whole life is about this disease.”

Diabetes results when an individual’s blood glucose, or blood sugar, is too high. With Juvenile Diabetes the pancreas does not produce insulin, a hormone that helps glucose get into the cells and provide them with energy. Without insulin, too much glucose stays in the blood. Eventually, high blood glucose can lead to serious problems with the heart, kidneys, eyes, nerves, gums and teeth.

Living with the illness has now prompted Keenan into action, communicating with other families in the same situation, while raising awareness of the disease and funds for research. This year, Keenan and others in her family will be participating in the “Walk for the Cure” on June 3 in Moncton and, of course, hosting the yard sale this weekend.

“Support for the sale has been wonderful. People have been so generous and we are very grateful for everyone’s help,” she said.

Jules and Abby will also be helping out and raising funds. The girls, along with Jules’ twin brother Samuel, will be selling Crystal Light at the event.

The yard sale is this coming Saturday, May 19, at the Anglican Church Hall at 293 Main Street in Blackville from 9 am to 3 pm. For information on how to donate to the Walk for a Cure, call the Keenans at 506-843-6081 or email jasonjen@nbnet.nb.ca.

Proving How Great Canadian Kids Are

Today, to conclude International Youth Week, educators, child-focused organizations, issue experts, healthcare workers and parents will meet to try and change the way Canadians view youth to a more positive light at the third Helping Canadian Kids Thrive! Conference. The conference will highlight success stories to illustrate how great Canadian youth are and how easy it is to provide them with opportunities with meaningful participation in society so they can excel.

International Youth Week is a celebration of the positive contributions that youth make in their communities. “What a perfect time for all of us to recognize that the majority of children are good and doing good things.” says Joanne McQuiggan, Executive Director of Thrive! The Canadian Centre for Positive Youth Development. “This is a gathering of people who have success stories to prove that focusing on children’s strengths is far more productive than always trying to fix what’s wrong.”

The conference comes in response to the ongoing focus on the shortcomings of our youth, such as bullying, substance abuse and other destructive behaviours. As the vast majority of children do not exhibit such behaviours, many people see the event as being long overdue. Craig Keilburger, Founder and Chair of Free the Children that has involved over one million children and youth in advocacy projects around the world says, “Children are making the wise decisions, leading by example and making a difference in their peer groups, communities and around the world every day. It’s time for people to stand up and recognize the things that our youth are doing right.”

Celebrating youth is only part of the conference objectives however, as children cannot continue to succeed without effective support systems that bring out the best in them. Conference participants will also be provided with easy-to-use, research-proven tools that any adult can use to fully engage youth in positive behaviours and community involvement.

The Miramichi organizing committee is extremely proud to be hosting the Thrive! Conference. “We consider this conference to be a celebration,” says Mary Lynn Jardine, Youth Recreation Coordinator, City of Miramichi. “It is a celebration of our efforts to promote MY MIRAMICHI. MY MIRAMICHI is a great place to live work and play. Our service providers, our schools, business, our parents and the youth themselves have embraced the concept of positive youth development. The Miramichi region has been working to reshape its future by promoting strength focused initiatives. “My new motto is that we work with youth not for youth. And I am most proud of the high number of youth delegates and volunteers participating in this year’s conference.” The local committee has left no detail to chance; the Conference Delegates will experience true Miramichi Hospitality.

As well, conference participants will learn about Lions Quest programs – award-winning personal and social skills programs for young people that have helped more than six million students ages five to 18 reach their full potential. One of the unique aspects of Lions Quest programs is instruction in the concept of service-learning. This valuable teaching method enhances what is taught in the classroom by providing students with opportunities to use newly acquired skills and knowledge in real-life situations in their communities, which help to develop personal and social responsibility.

The delegates at the Helping Canadian Kids Thrive! Conference believe its time for all Canadians to gain access to these tools, and to commit to using them, while celebrating and nurturing our youth leaders. “In light of all the great things about our kids, I find it difficult to see how any Canadian could not see their glass as being full.” says Joanne McQuiggan. “But there is still ongoing work to be done. Whether you’re a parent, teacher, community member, or neighbour – it’s up to all of us to make sure that kids have what they need to be their best.”

For more than twenty years, Thrive! has provided products, workshops, services and curriculum resources to support adults in helping young people deal with the complex issues they face every day. The mission of Thrive! is to provide leadership, knowledge and resources to develop healthy capable young people of strong character, by working with individuals, agencies and organizations both in Canada and abroad to give Canadians access to the best possible positive youth development resources and training experiences.

International Media in Miramichi

Miramichiers from upriver down to the Bay
Showed up in large numbers to show the Foreign Press
A Down Home Good Time

Last week some of our Mighty Crew went to a special event at O'Donaghue's Pub in Chatham. A group of international journalists on a fishing trip had been invited to enjoy an evening of Miramichi hospitality and have an audience with the Premier. A lovely lunch of beef stew, seafood chowder, homemade rolls, ginger bread, carrot cake, and cheese cake was served.

Connie & Paul, Owen Murdoch and the legendary Matilda Murdoch were on hand for an old fashioned Miramichi Kitchen Party that had Premier Graham rolling up his sleeves and playing the spoons right along with them.

Raw footage from a documentary film being made for a German audience was shown. Some following a truck driver in Blackville, but more from down the Bay with generations of fishermen ice fishing smelts. Afterward the eldest man from the film stood and spoke about their way of life and how it has changed since he first started and also about the Escuminac Disaster. The foreign press asked questions and then Connie & Paul sang the saddest song about the women who must wait for their men at sea.

All in all, the evening was a great success and very well attended.

Community Celebration of Life Memorial ceremony to be held

The first Community Celebration of Life Memorial ceremony will be held on Sunday, May 6 at the Miramichi Kin Centre. The ceremony will honor patients who have died while being followed by the Miramichi Extra Mural Program. This memorial service will not replace the Palliative Care memorial service that is held at the Miramichi Regional Hospital.

“The Community Celebration of Life Memorial ceremony will allow the family to grieve in an atmosphere strengthened by the community as everyone present will share the common bond of losing a loved one and friend,” says Connie Doucet, Extra Mural Program palliative care coordinator and organizer of the event.

“This ceremony celebrates the life of the individual and also provides closure for the Extra Mural Program staff,” says Doucet.

A total of 31 families have been invited to attend. Doucet says this memorial ceremony has been a goal of the Miramichi Extra Mural Program for some time and it is wonderful that it will be finally realized. “We plan to hold the service twice a year.”

The memorial service is being organized by the staff and volunteers of the Miramichi Extra Mural Program and the Pastoral and Spiritual Care Department of the Miramichi Regional Hospital. Community involvement also includes the Miramichi Kinsmen who have donated the Kin Centre for the event. Reverend Diane Jukes, protestant chaplain for the Miramichi Regional Health Authority and Father Leon Creamer will lead the ceremony. Music will be provided by the Miramichi Extra Mural Program choir led by Doucet and accompanied by fellow musician Paul McGraw.

Miramichi Regional Health Authority displaying community programs

The Miramichi Regional Health Authority (MRHA) is reaching out to the public this weekend as it displays several of its community wellness programs at the Miramichi Lifestyles 2007 show.

A ‘healthy living expo’ is a new component this year to the long-running lifestyles show happening at the Miramichi Civic Centre from April 27-29. This expo will feature displays from the Miramichi Regional Health Authority, City of Miramichi Recreation and Wellness, Culture and Sport.

“The focus of the expo is active living and wellness,” says Clarissa Whitlock, Community Health Promotion Coordinator with the Miramichi Regional Health Authority. She, along with David Sisk, City of Miramichi Recreation Supervisor and Rene Pelletier, a Consultant for the Dept of Wellness, Culture and Sport have been meeting for the past several months to organize displays for the expo.

“The MRHA will be represented by 10 community programs that will display health promotion and prevention information. We will have Addiction Services, Methadone Stakeholders, Community Mental Health Services, Mango, Regional Diabetes Program, Healthy Learners, Breast Screening, Women’s Wellness and MRHA’s Workplace Wellness.

“For example, our breast screening program will be promoting its digital mammography services and showing the public digital images, along with providing females breast screening information; our Addiction Services program will focus on information for parents and teens on today’s issues of marijuana and crystal meth. All the programs have worked really diligently to organize their displays to get the best health information together for the public.”

This MRHA’s involvement in this expo maintains its commitment to the wellness of the community it serves. The public is encouraged to make plans to attend the Miramichi Lifestyles show and the Healthy Living Expo this weekend.

World Asthma Day will be celebrated

World Asthma Day will be celebrated on May 1. The day is an opportunity to improve asthma awareness and care around the world. This year’s theme is “You can control your asthma”. David Adams Richards at Frye Festival in Moncton this Weekend

Renowned New Brunswick author David Adams Richards will present the second Antonine Maillet - Northrop Frye Lecture on Saturday, April 28 from noon to 1 pm. The theme of the lecture will be “Playing the Inside Out”. The event will take place during the Frye Festival at Moncton City Hall in the Council Chambers at 655 Main Street. The conference will be in English with simultaneous interpretation.

Born in 1950 in Newcastle, N.B., David Adams Richards currently writes in Toronto. He is known for his almost mythic vision. The Vancouver Sun calls him “perhaps the greatest Canadian writer alive”. His latest book The Friends of Meager Fortune was published in 2006 by Doubleday Canada.

In his lecture, David Adams Richards will consider the intellectual, emotional and imaginative strength required to stand by one’s convictions as a writer of fiction.
“A writer must never compromise his imaginative vision in order to be accepted. The result will be an erosion of his art,” explains Paul Curtis, English Professor at the Université de Moncton and one of the organizers of the event, in reference to Richards’ talk.

The writer will also observe how writers in the Maritimes have long been outside the economic and political centres of power, but not the cultural centre. “From this relatively marginal position, the attraction to modify one’s vision in order to be accepted appears all the more powerful,” says Curtis.

These themes of the outsider as well economic and political centres of power are very much in evidence in Mr. Richards latest and perhaps most powerful novel The Friends of Meager Fortune.

Second annual conference labelled a success

The second annual women’s wellness conference is being labelled a success by organizers and attendees.

Over 90 women from the Miramichi and surrounding areas attended the one-day conference on March 8 at the Miramichi Regional Hospital in celebration of International Women’s Day 2007. The conference, “A Day for Women” was an initiative of the Women’s Wellness Program committee of the Miramichi Regional Health Authority (MRHA). Health professionals from the MRHA and community volunteers worked together to offer this enlightening day for the second year in a row.

During the conference, the program unveiled its new logo, slogan and pamphlet. The design of the logo is a daisy representing regeneration, new growth and simple beauty while the soft pastel colors represent the strength, elegance and the complexity of a woman's anatomy. The slogan, which was penned by MRHA staff member, Beth Murray is ‘Lifestyle to Health’.

“Again this year, we are very pleased with the outcome of the conference. Seats were filled in just three days and we know all the women who attended enjoyed themselves,” says Jacqueline Poitras, the Women’s Wellness Program nurse and chair of the organizing committee.

“We know now that females in our region want to be informed about health issues. They are interested in health promotion and are being proactive by attending educational sessions that we provide for them. The comments received were positive and these comments will help us plan future conferences,” she added.

“A Day for Women” was made possible by the support of many generous sponsors. A thank you is extended to the organizations who donated to the event.

Program unveiling to be held at conference

The Women’s Wellness Program at the Miramichi Regional Health Authority (MRHA) will unveil its logo and slogan during the second annual women’s conference being held tomorrow, March 8.

The Women’s Wellness Program was formed as a result of a successful partnership with the Beausejour Regional Health Authority in January 2002. This partnership’s mandate was to increase awareness for a need of cervical screening in women. However, years prior to that, statistical data revealed a need for this type of program in the region. A weekly pap test clinic was established to provide alternate resources for the female population who didn’t have access to yearly exams.

In 2004, a Women’s Wellness Program and a committee made up of health care professionals and community citizens was formed. A community needs assessment was completed and results indicated the female population wanted more information on health issues such as overweight and obesity, breast cancer, stress, back pain, heart disease and blood pressure.

The program will unveil its new logo, slogan and pamphlet during the opening of tomorrow’s conference. The design of the logo is a daisy representing regeneration, new growth and simple beauty while the soft pastel colors represent the strength, elegance and the complexity of a woman's anatomy. The slogan, which was penned by an MRHA staff member, Beth Murray is ‘Lifestyle to Health’.

The unveiling will be before an audience of 120 women who have registered for the second annual women’s wellness conference planned each year in recognition of International Women’s Day.

During this year’s conference, women will enjoy presentations by Community Non-Profit Task Force leader Claudette Bradshaw. Following Ms. Bradshaw, an informative presentation on the topic of Breast Health offered by Dollena Warren-Giguère, a registered nurse from Sherbrooke. The afternoon will be enlightening as well as the attendees will learn skills of financial planning with expert Jocelyne Browne of Credit Counselling Services of Atlantic Canada. The day will end with local author Judy Bowman as she helps every woman express the importance of their own life story.
